Hitler’s henchmen, Himmler and Goering, must be laughing out loud at how American citizens are being indoctrinated to the point of no return, and don’t even know it. It is, after all, the same thing that happened in Germany during World War II. Indoctrination, of course, is one of the more civilized words for brainwashing; a word made (un)popular in the 1950’s describing the “mental” treatment of American soldiers during the Korean War. Indoctrination’s cousin-words are, mind control, reorientation, and thought reform, but brainwashing says it best, and the technique can be quite effective when it is administered by experts.
A “professional”application of brainwashing is what is happening to Americans today. Theoretically, the dying embers caught fire right after September 11th, the day the Twin Towers fell. From that moment on, Americans were informed that this was an attack on our country and that we had to take revenge on the disaster’s perpetrator.
That is when the brainwashing of American minds by the government became a reality and moved forward in depth and in earnest. We were told, in uncertain terms, who the attackers were, what country they came from, why they were attacking us, which other countries might be secretly involved, and quickly, very quickly, squelched any horrifying thoughts or suggestions that our own government may have played some part in it.
The result is, America in now in a war (albeit an unconstitutional one) with three nations, none of which we know much of anything about. After which came month after month of conflicts with these three nations that may or may not have been responsible for 9/11, but supposedly harbor the authentic killer, bin Ladin, whom we have yet, after nine years of hunting in caves, keep coming up empty.
All the while America citizens are kept effectively brainwashed by professionals who know all the tricks of the trade; until now we have a nation of ignorant, unaware, stupefied citizens more interested in Two and Half Men, or who won last night’s Dancing with the Stars. And it is our misfortune that this mass of otherwise, honest, hard-working, family-loving, God-fearing, flesh in mental bondage, continues, against all evidence to the contrary, to skip through life as if nary a shot has been fired, and heaven is just around the corner. We’re like a nation of sleeping Rip Van Winkles, except that if we wait 20 years to wake up there will be nothing left to wake up for.
Some savvy writer has listed three Principles of Re-Education (brainwashing). They are: (1) Repetition. Saying the same things over and over again until the person’s mind accepts even absurdities as truth. (2) Activity. The people are never left alone or given private time of their own, they are always active. (In George Orwell’s 1984,, people were expected to participate by cheering during Hate Week.) (3) Criticism. Subjects are made to feel uncertain about their thought processes, and kept under a constant feeling of being ineffectual, incompetent, even humiliated.
Obviously there are many techniques for brainwashing people. Hypnosis, confusing doctrine, rejection of former values, peer group pressure, guilt, controlled approval, and many more. And the expert brainwasher knows them all, and uses the technique best suited to intimidate the most people. The minds of human beings operate fundamentally the same; their waterloo is that, being open, pliable and accessible, it is a fairly simple matter for the “brainwasher” to steer these minds into preconceived notions and their acceptance.
Herman Goering, Hitler’s second in command, explained the concept of war when he was standing trial at Nuremburg. He said, “Naturally the common people don’t want war; neither in Russia nor in England nor in America, nor for that matter in Germany. That is understood. But, after all, it is the leaders of the country who determine the policy and it is always a simple matter to drag the people along, whether it is a democracy, a fascist dictatorship, a parliament, or a Communist dictatorship.”
When Goering was corrected that “in a democracy the people have some say in the matter through their elected representatives.” Goering responded, “Oh, that is all well and good, but voice or no voice, the people can always be brought the bidding of the leaders. That is easy. All you have to do is tell them they are being attacked, and denounce the pacifists for lack of patriotism and exposing the country to danger. It works the same way in any country.”
In America, we have a basic and most critical need: we should work to become aware, question, criticize, dissent, or refuse outright to become part of the destruction of America. To do that we must use our heads for something more than emotional putty for nefarious brainwashers to play with.
